It was in the swinging sixties, with its sexual liberation and youth culture, that the mini skirt was born. Designers at the time like Andre Courreges begin experimenting with hemlines. But ?t's widely thought that fashion designer Mary Quant was the pioneer of the style in the UK and she reportedly named the skirt after her favourite car, the Mini Cooper.

It was seen as a rebellion to the repressed post-war generation and the utilatarian fashions of the fifties. With models like Twiggy at the forefront of fashion, it flourished throughout the decade.
